Book Review/Giveaway: Law and Author by Erika Chase

From the publisher: Bob Miller, retired police chief and member of the Ashton Corners Mystery Readers and Cheese Straws Society, is stunned by the arrival of his twenty-one-year-old granddaughter, Darla, whom he has never seen. Bob has been estranged from his own daughter for decades and hopes to make up for his absence in Darla’s life. But some of the ladies of the book club find their Southern hospitality strained as they question the motives behind this sudden reunion.

After a dead man is found in Molly Mathews’s backyard, their concerns grow more serious. Lizzie Turner saw Darla arguing with the stranger the day before, but when the police question her, Darla proves to be an unreliable narrator. It’s up to the book club to uncover the real story . . . before another victim is written into the plot.

Law and Author is the fifth book in Erika Chase's popular Ashton Corners Book Club mystery series. It introduces us to the granddaughter of one of my favorite book club members, Bob. Darla and Bob have never even met because of his estrangement from her mother, so everyone is stunned (and somewhat suspicious) when she shows up completely unexpectedly. Lizzie witnesses an altercation between Darla and a stranger in town, and the next day the same man is found dead in Molly's backyard. Bob and Molly cannot believe that Darla had anything to do with the murder, and enlist the help of the book club to clear her name. Then the arrival of Darla's abusive, druggie boyfriend puts everyone into their most dangerous situation yet.

This series is one of the coziest of the cozy, with a southern-fried atmosphere and a cast of characters that have come to feel like friends. The relationships between the "book club cohorts" drive the series, and the mystery kept me guessing until the end. I hope Darla continues to be a part of future books, and I look forward to many more adventures with the book club crew.

Giveaway: Leave a comment by noon eastern on Friday, September 4th for your chance to win a copy of Law and Author. US entries only, please.

It is said a cover will sell a book faster than the title. This is very true for this book. Thank you for the review and giveaway. robeader53@yahoo.com

Why should I enter this contest? My cats have been known to paw through books, but only the one with the cat, bird, and bat pictures in it seems to have met their approval. Their attention to other books has been harsh. Oh well...if I win it I promise to pass it on to someone else here before the cats get at it :-) salolianigodagewi @ yahoo

I follow Erika, and am excited about her new book! I always "judge books by their cover," but enjoy the twists and puns of the title. Both lead me to the reviews and synopses, so I can make a good choice about which book I plan to spend my time reading. kat8762@aol.com

Great series, and I always love seeing the book club's reading lists at the end of the book. I know I've gotten some books to add to my TBR list from those, or if already on my list, moved them up the a few places. Thanks very much for the chance to win.
