And now our weekly answers (answered by Mommy this week) for the Friendly Fill-Ins challenge, hosted by 15andmeowing and McGuffy's Reader...

1. For Easter, I don't do anything special. Pretty much a regular Sunday dinner with the family.

2. My favorite Easter treat is Cadbury eggs. The new white chocolate ones are my favorite.

3. Lately, the song is stuck in my head is whatever I've heard last. I get ear worm very easily.

4. The A-Z Blogging Challenge isn't for me. I completely respect everyone who takes on this challenge, but I wouldn't be able to do it.

Mudpie, Queen of the Wild Frontier #ChewyInfluencer

Meows from Mudpie!

This month when my Chewy Influencer email arrived and I talked Mommy into letting me request some new-to-me kibble, she said I also had to try out a new wet food, and I agreed. Successful relationships are all about compromise, after all!

I received the Nutro Wild Frontier trays, which contained 6 twin-packs in chicken & beef, and 6 twin-packs in salmon & trout (24 servings total). We love the idea of portioned servings, eliminating the need to refrigerate leftovers (cold food - yuck!), even though I'm such a picky eater I don't even come close to finishing a portion in one meal!

Before I tell you my thoughts, here are the key benefits according to Chewy.com:
  • Inspired by nature, this multi-pack includes high-protein recipes featuring real chicken or real salmon as the first ingredient.
  • Contains 12 twin-packs which gives your feline friend 24 perfectly portioned servings.
  • Grain-free formula is made without corn, wheat or soy—just high-quality ingredients.
  • No artificial colors, flavors or preservatives for a natural and delicious taste.
  • Nutro's dedicated team of experts tailor their formulas to your pet's life stage and health condition. They only use natural ingredients that they directly buy and can trace back to their suppliers.

So what does my fussy palate have to say about Nutro Wild Frontier? On a 4 paw scale, I give the chicken & beef 2 paws. (Any food that I don't immediately walk away from automatically gets a single paw up.) I ate about as much of it as I do any wet food I'm offered.

Mommy debated offering me the salmon & trout because she didn't think I'd like it. That just shows how much she knows! I *loved* it and came as close as I ever have to cleaning my bowl! The trays of fishy goodness get a solid 3 paw rating! I like that this food is a fairly wet pate, although Mommy still mixed in extra water just the way I like it.

I think any cat who enjoys wet food should ask their human to add a case of Nutro Wild Frontier to their next Chewy.com order. It has super healthy ingredients to make cat moms and dads happy, it tastes great to make kitties happy, and neither of you will have to deal with nasty leftovers anymore!

Tell them Mudpie sent you!

My 1st Official Adoption ~ 20 Years Ago #TBT

It's hard to remember my life before the torties took over, but thankfully there is lots of photographic evidence!

I adopted Sashi on March 31, 1998 - 20 years ago this Saturday. She was my first little girl, the first cat in my life that came from a shelter, and the first cat I adopted on my own as an adult.

She had been given up by her family at 9 years old. I was told many people thought she was beautiful but passed her by because of her age. Week after week I went past her cage at the PetSmart adoption center until I finally realized she was waiting for me. We were blessed to have 8 wonderful years together. Her passing in 2006 tore my heart into a million pieces. She was the first cat that was truly mine, and I felt like I had lost a child.

Every now and then I spend a little time going through my collection of non-digitized photos. They bring back so many memories of those that came before.

That box was her favorite napping spot. I still have it.

Unlike my other ladycats, Sashi enjoyed playing dress up. She would let me put anything on her.

Her favorite treat was canned whipped cream. On birthdays we put a candle in it.

And nothing made her happier than a nice, warm blankie.

I have no doubt that Sashi was the first kitty waiting at the Bridge when Tara and Truffles arrived, and that they have a daily catnip klatch! I hope they all know how much they're still remembered and loved.

Mudpie Interviews...Hamlet the Algonquin Cat

Meows from Mudpie!

I must admit that I may have developed a bit of a crush on the kitty I'm interviewing today, but one look at his pictures and I'm sure you'll understand why.

Many of you are probably aware of the history of the Algonquin Cat at the famous New York City hotel. Some of you may have even had a chance to visit one! Well, there's a new cat in town named Hamlet and he is a total hunk!!! (Sorry, that sounds pretty unprofessional of me, doesn't it?) Interviewing him via email was fun, but I sure would love to meet him "in the fur" one day!

Welcome, Hamlet! Thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to chat with me. Could you start by telling us what you remember about your earliest days in a Long Island feral colony and how you came to be rescued by Bidawee animal shelter?

I was spotted on a windowsill in Hempstead LI – taken to a shelter and ended up in Bideawee. I know I was part of a feral colony as my left ear is tipped which signifies I was trapped, neutered and returned.

How were chosen for the great honor of becoming the Algonquin Hotel's 12 feline ambassador (and 7th Hamlet)?

I am Hamlet the 8th !!!

Matilda was ready to retire so my FURiends at the Algonquin called Bideawee to see if an orange male cat was available. They thought it would be fun to have a Hamlet since there were just three Matildas. I had just arrived (June) and they came to meet me. My PURRsonality won them over and I went to live at the Algonquin in July training and by mid September I became the full time ambassador.

For anyone reading this who doesn't already know, please fill us in on the history of the Algonquin Hotel cat...

The tradition of The Algonquin Cat dates back to the early 1920’s. The hotel’s first cat was named Billy, who lived in the hotel during the famed Round Table of the 1920’s. In 1933, two days after Billy passed a stray cat wandered into the hotel looking for shelter. He was immediately welcomed to stay and named Rusty. Algonquin Resident, John Barrymore felt this name was too common for a cat residing in such a prestigious hotel. He then renamed Hamlet in honor of Barrymore’s greatest stage role. The tradition of the Algonquin Cat was born and over 96 years the hotel has had eight Hamlets and three cats named Matilda.

Why are all the boy kitties named Hamlet and the girls Matilda?

See above – no idea why Matilda

During your "settling in" period, did you receive any advice from the late, great Matilda?

Matilda was very charming and taught me all the ins and outs of the job.

What's a typical day like for you?

In between naps I enjoy my meals, playing with FURiends and greeting guests.

Do you have free reign of the hotel so people can visit you at any time, or do you make scheduled appearances to your adoring public?

I am out and about at the Front Desk area 24/7 (except when napping).

Is there anything about your job that you don't enjoy?

I don’t like when people try to pick me up or poke me while I am eating.

What are some of your favorite foods, toys, and napping spots?

I love ALL food but Bonito Flakes, Temptations and Lickable treats are top on my list – My tree house and sleepy pod are nap winners and wands and balls win it for toys.

Just between you and me, do you ever get into any mischief or are you strictly a professional?

Don’t tell but I am a cat – therefore curious and go places that surprise people.

What do you have coming up on your social calendar? Will you be hosting the annual cat fashion show fundraiser this year? And what about the rumblings I hear that there's a book coming out about you later this year

My fundraiser/cat fashion show will be in August at which time my new book will be presented.

Lastly, name one thing about you most people don't know that might come as a surprise?

I have a jealous streak.

Have you ever visited the Algonquin Hotel in New York City and met one of the feline mascots?

Tortie Shorties on Mystery Monday

Welcome to this week's edition of Tortie Shorties on Mystery Monday!

We hope you enjoy our choices.

From the publisher: Everyone knows a leopard can't change its spots. But can a thief hide the spots on a catnapped Bengal? Groomer Cassie McGlone is about to find out . . .

With no ID for his pet, an agitated young man shows up at Cassie's Comfy Cats claiming his house has burned down and he needs to board his big, brown cat, Ayesha. But after a bath washes dye out of the cat's coat and reveals beautiful spots, Cassie suspects the exotic-looking feline may in fact be a valuable Bengal show cat, possibly stolen. At the same time, there are rumored sightings of a "wild cat" in the hills of Chadwick, New Jersey. Could there be a connection?

When Ayesha's alleged owner turns up dead, it looks like whoever wants the beautiful Bengal is not pussyfooting around. Working with the police, Cassie and her staff need to be careful not to reveal the purloined purebred's whereabouts while they discreetly make inquiries to cat breeders to find her real owners. But after a break-in attempt rattles Cassie's cage, it's clear someone let the cat out of the bag. And when a second body is found, it's up to Cassie to spot the killer, who may be grooming her to be the next victim . . .

Tortie Shorties Review: The debut novel in this series (The Persian Always Meows Twice) was one of my very favorite books of 2017, and I loved the sequel just as much, if not more! This one stars a beautiful Bengal cat named Ayesha who would have quite a story to tell if only she could talk, but since she can't, it's up to cat groomer/cattery owner Cassie to get to the bottom of things when the mysterious man who claims to own her dies under mysterious circumstances. The situation becomes even more suspicious when she discovers that Ayesha has been dyed and her microchip was removed. What on earth has this poor cat been through and how does it tie to the dead man?

There are secondary mysteries to be solved in the form of mysterious goings-on at Cassie's boyfriend's veterinary clinic and a series of scary attacks by a wild cat deep in the woods. I correctly pinpointed the murder suspect before Cassie did, but the motive was more shocking and disturbing than I ever could have imagined. This series is special because it's completely cat-centric in every way, making it pure purr-fection for those of us addicted to cat cozies. I'm envious of Cassie's career as a roomer, enabling her to make a living from her passion for cats, even though they manage to drag her into some pretty hairy situations! (Bad pun alert!)

From the publisher: Legendary stage and movie star Sir Nigel Bellingham arrives on Cape Cod to star in a stage production of The Hound of the Baskervilles put on by the West London Theater Festival. When Sir Nigel, some of the cast, and the director visit the Sherlock Holmes Bookshop at 222 Baker Street, Gemma Doyle realizes that Sir Nigel is not at all suited to the role. He is long past his prime and an old drunk to boot. The cast, in particular the much younger actor who previously had the role, are not happy, but the show must go on.

Before the play opens, Leslie Wilson, mother of Gemma’s best friend Jayne, arranges a fundraising afternoon tea to be catered by Mrs. Hudson’s Tea Room. The tea is a huge success, but when it’s time to leave, Sir Nigel has gone missing—only to be found at the bottom of the rocky cliff, dead. Along with the dead body, Gemma finds evidence incriminating Leslie Wilson. When the police, in the presence of handsome detective Ryan Ashburton and suspicious detective Louise Estrada, focus their attention on Leslie despite the numerous other suspects, the game is once again afoot and it’s again up to the highly perceptive Gemma and the ever-confused but loyal Jayne to clear Jayne’s mother’s name.

Tortie Shorties Review: Since The Hound of the Baskervilles has always been one of my favorite Holmes stories I've been particularly excited for this third title in the Sherlock Holmes Bookshop mystery to be released. Excitement at Gemma's bookshop and best friend Jayne's tea room next door revolves around the West London Theater Festival, summer stock for the Cape Cod set. Sherlock Holmes fans are expected to descend upon the shops in droves thanks to the production of The Hound of the Baskervilles starring Sir Nigel Bellingham. But when Sir Nigel and his entourage make an appearance at the bookshop it becomes quite apparent that he's not the man he used to be, and he doesn't make a much better impression at the fundraising tea catered by Jayne. When the tea is over Nigel goes missing, and straight out of a scene from Holmes' classic tale, he's found dead at the bottom of a cliff. Worse yet, even though everyone in Nigel's inner circle had reason to want him dead, Jayne's mother Leslie becomes the main person of interest thanks to evidence found at the scene and her mysterious past with the dead actor.

As in previous installments, Gemma isn't the most likable protagonist. She's blunt and abrasive, yet she somehow manages to get people to spill their deepest, darkest secrets. Her familial ties to the legendary character are apparent in her keen mind and powers of observation, and she uses them to maximum effect in uncovering the real killer. My only complaint with the series is it needs more of Moriarty, the bookstore cat. His apparent dislike for Gemma while turning on the charm for everyone else is quite humorous, and I'd love to delve into his feline psyche to find out just why that is! Plus this book starts with Gemma cleaning up his muddy paw prints that have been tracked through the shop even though he's an indoor cat, yet we never find out what he's been getting into. Don't leave us hanging, Moriarty!

An Adopted Pet's Love Changes Everything

I adopted Truffles from my local Petco so the store is very special to me. Even today whenever I stop in to pick up a few things I can't help but glance over at the adoption center remembering that day nearly 5 years ago and how excited I was to begin our long, happy life together. Sadly that wasn't meant to be, but even if I'd known the heartbreak that was to come I still would've brought her home that day.

The Petco Foundation is teaming up with award-winning artist and creator of the heart-warming MUTTS comic strip, Patrick McDonnell for the annual “Love Changes Everything” campaign in an effort to raise $3.1 million to support lifesaving animal welfare work nationwide.

The “Love Changes Everything” Campaign runs through April 1, and this year pet adopters can join the Petco Foundation in creating the world’s largest mosaic mural of adopted pets and their people. Adopters submitting photos at petcofoundation.org/snaplove will be eligible to win daily prizes, including a $100 Petco gift card, a signed MUTTS print, and a coupon for a bag of WholeHeartedPets pet food, PLUS a $500 grant award for eligible adoption organizations!

The mosaic, powered in partnership with WholeHearted pet food, will come to life in New York City’s Union Square Park on Sunday, March 25 from noon to 4:00 PM at the All for Love Adoption Rally featuring adoptable pets from more than twenty New York area animal welfare organizations. Attendees can meet MUTTS creator Patrick McDonnell, pose for pictures with the famed MUTTS characters Mooch and Earl and participate in other fun activities centered around celebrating pet adoption.

“Patrick McDonnell has been a champion of pet adoption for years, and we are thrilled to join forces again with MUTTS to promote pet adoption and raise funds to help animals across the country. We hope our Love Changes Everything’ campaign, along with this mosaic mural, inspires everyone to join the lifesaving movement by adopting, donating or volunteering. With six adopted pets of my own, I can confidently say that the love of an adopted pet does change everything,” said Susanne Kogut, president of the Petco Foundation.

Animal lovers can support the “Love Changes Everything" campaign by making a donation in any Petco, Unleashed by Petco store or online at petcofoundation.org/love. Anyone who makes a donation of $10 or more will receive a limited-edition tote bag featuring MUTTS artwork specifically designed for the Love Changes Everything campaign. I got my tote last weekend!

The Purrfect 10: Fun Facts About the Kit-Cat Klock

We love reading and researching anything and everything about cats, and wanted to find a fun and unique way to share the interesting facts we learn with you! Since top 10 lists are very popular in the blogosphere, we created The Purrfect 10 as a way to present 10 educational or fascinating tidbits about a wide variety of cat-related topics, everything from health issues to cat breeds to famous felines.

The Kit-Cat Klock has been an icon of Americana for over 85 years, charming generations with it's swinging tail, rolling eyes and contagious smile. Not only is the clock a cherished item in homes all over the country, its history is fascinating, and we have the scoop in this month's edition of The Purrfect 10!

1) The Kit-Cat Klock was invented in 1932 by designer Earl Arnault for the Allied Manufacturing Company in Portland, Oregon. It was the height of the Great Depression, and the charming Kit-Cat brightened the lives of Americans during one of our country's most challenging times. These earliest clocks had metal bodies, metal clock hands and 4 toes on each of the 2 paws. They also had knobs on the front to start the motor spinning in the correct direction once it was plugged in. Allied Clock eventually began using plastic molding and moved their operations to Seattle.

2) During the 1940s and 1950s the clock exploded in popularity, earning its stripes as an American icon. The mid-50s also marked the only design changes the Kit-Cat Klock has seen in over 80 years: forepaws were added to hold the dial, the whiskers made thicker, and the tail curvier. The Kit-Cat Klock also got a dapper bowtie. The late 1950’s also brought "jeweled" versions into production. From 1957 to 1981 they had felt on the tail between two rows of crystals, but starting in 1982 they had only one row of crystals and no felt on the tails.

3) In 1962 Allied Clock moved production to southern California and was renamed the California Clock Company. In 1982 entrepreneur Woody Young took over as Owner & President, a title he still holds today.  By the late 1980′s, the American Made legacy of Kit-Cat was almost lost! In the span of a few years, American electric motor manufacturing was almost exclusively relocated to Asia, leaving Kit-Cat without a US motor supplier. Good old American entrepreneurship took over and the California Clock Company developed a new battery technology able to drive the mechanisms of the Kit-Cat Klock, giving way to the first battery-powered Kit-Cat Klock.

4) Although colored Kit-Cats have been manufactured since the late 1930s, the first Limited Edition color was made in 1992, including “Game Day Orange” and “Game Day Blue” to celebrate collegiate sports and "The Spirit of 76" series in red, white, and blue. Other colors ran from Hunter Green to Sapphire, as well as millennial clocks jeweled with Swarovski crystals. Since 1992 all colors have been limited editions with only the Classic Black in constant production.

5) A new member of the Kit-Cat family arrived in 1996 with the introduction of Kitty-Cat, a space-saving 3/4-sized clock.

6) 2001 introduced the Lady Kit-Cat Klock, swapping out the bow tie for pearls and eyelashes.

7) 2007 marked Kit-Cat’s 75th anniversary, and was celebrated with The Great All American Road Show which lasted 75 days along the entire Route 66. It included the world’s largest Kit-Cat Klock at 75 inches tall and a 75-year-old Ford Deuce, specially painted to celebrate the clock.

8) 2012 marked Kit-Cat’s 80th anniversary, 50 years manufacturing all of their clocks in California, and 30 years with Woody Young as President. To celebrate this milestone, Kit-Cat sponsored the only 100% US grown commercial float in the 2012 Pasadena Rose Parade.

9) The Kit-Cat Klock has left its mark on American pop culture too, being featured in the opening sequence of 1985's Back To The FutureKaty Perry the Movie: Part of Me, and Taylor Swift's music video for We Are Never Getting Back Together.

10) After 85 years, Kit-Cat Klocks are now sold in stores all over the world. Outside the US, Kit-Kat Klocks are most popular in Japan, the UK, France and Germany. In fact, for the last 50 years, the manufacturer estimates that an average of one clock has been purchased every 3 minutes!

The Kit-Cat Creed
Put a smile on everyone’s face;
Love in everyone’s heart;
Energy in everyone’s body;
and Be a positive force in everyone’s life!

Does a Kit-Cat Klock hang in your home?
(If not, come back on Friday for your chance to win one!!!)

Cat Tails: Heart-Warming Stories about the Cats and Kittens of RESQCATS by Jeffyne Telson - Blog Tour & Book Review

CAT TAILS: HEART-WARMING STORIES ABOUT THE CATS AND KITTENS OF RESQCATS by Jeffyne Telson, 332 pp., Animals/Cat Rescue, $27.95
(Hardcover)

Title: CAT TAILS: HEART-WARMING STORIES ABOUT THE CATS AND KITTENS OF RESQCATS

Author: Jeffyne Telson

Publisher: Independent

Pages: 332

Genre: Animals/Cat Rescue

In 1997, Jeffyne Telson founded RESQCATS, Inc, as a non-profit organization dedicated to the rescue, care and adoption of stray and abandoned cats and kittens.

In the ensuing 20 years, with the help of a small group of dedicated volunteers, Jeffyne has grown RESQCATS well beyond her dreams, into a highly respected rescue organization that has placed more than 2800 cats and kittens with qualified families and individuals.

And now, she has written a book about her journey of creating a cat rescue, the challenges and opportunities she has faced, and most important of all, the valuable life lessons the cats and kittens have taught her.

I found Cat Tails to be one of the most inspirational books I've ever had the pleasure of reading. So many of us are desperate to find ways to help cats, and Jeffyne rolled up her shirtsleeves and did something about it, building a rescue that has gone on to make a difference in the lives of countless cats in need. She's a tireless advocate for our feline friends and her passion for the cats entrusted to her care is obvious with each turn of the page. Every one of the cats immortalized in Cat Tails has left their mark on her, and in turn through her words they become a part of the reader as well. Some of these stories lifted my heart, others broke it, many left me sickened by the cruelty and ignorance of some members of the so-called human race, yet above all else they filled me with admiration for such an amazing cat lady. Anyone who cares about the welfare of cats needs to add Cat Tails to their reading list. It will give you hope when good news stories in the animal world seem hard to come by.

Watch Jeffyne talk about RESQCATS!

About the author:

Jeffyne Telson grew up in Dallas, Texas but has spent most of the last half of her life in California. Although she has Bachelor of Arts degree in graphic design from Texas Tech University, she has devoted the last two decades to the pursuit of her real life’s passion…caring for stray and abandoned cats and kittens.

In 1997, Jeffyne founded RESQCATS, Inc, as a non-profit organization dedicated to the rescue, care and adoption of stray and abandoned cats and kittens.

In the ensuing 20 years, with the help of a small group of dedicated volunteers, Jeffyne has grown RESQCATS well beyond her dreams, into a highly respected rescue organization that has placed more than 2700 cats and kittens with qualified families and individuals.

Today, in addition to being the President of RESQCATS, Jeffyne and her husband, Mitch, share their Santa Barbara, California home with 14 unadoptable cats, 9 collies and 15 giant African sulcata tortoises…all rescued of course!

Frazzled #SundaySelfie

Meows from Mudpie!

If you watch any sports news you may have heard that Mommy's favorite NASCAR driver Kevin Harvick has won not one, not two, but the last THREE weeks in a row! Needless to say, Sunday afternoons at our house have been a bit noisy, to say the least!

Today for my selfie I decided to recreate what my face looks like when Mommy shrieks with excitement when he takes the checkered flag. There's a bit of a blur, but that's because when it happens I'm typically looking for the nearest escape route! You would think I'd be used to it now, but I'm not.

Now the question is...can he win FOUR weeks in a row?!?!?! He does drive the 4 car, after all!

We're joining our friends at The Cat On My Head for the Sunday Selfies blog hop!

This Little Fussie Cat Went to Market #ChewyInfluencer

Meows from Mudpie!

This month when my Chewy Influencer email arrived my peepers immediately settled on a new-to-me food, Fussie Cat Market Fresh grain-free kibble. You know how much I love my dry food (much to Mommy's chagrin), so I begged and pleaded and batted my little eyelashes until she gave in and requested a sample for me. (Okay, I didn't really need to work that hard to get my way. Mommy is putty in my paws.)

Knowing that cats need meat protein to survive, Fussie Cat developed formulas that they call Physiologically Correct, creating wet and dry foods that are full of quality meats like boneless chicken, duck, tuna, shrimp and prawns to make sure your little carnivore is getting the protein-rich, feline-appropriate diet she needs. Plus they use FDA-registered kitchens—the same kitchens that produces canned food that's fit for people to eat. Thorough quality inspections are conducted daily for food safety, heavy metals, pathogens, contamination and pesticides.

Here's the super cool thing about Fussie Cat: Instead of just assuming what kind of food cats will like (good luck with that!), Fussie Cat lets them call the shots! Each recipe is co-created and taste-tested by cats to make sure your own kitty will love it. How pawsome is that???

Before I tell you my thoughts, here are the key benefits according to Chewy.com:
  • Created in the USA with the freshest and finest ingredients
  • Physiologically tuned recipe with complete, high-quality protein like real chicken and turkey
  • Grain-free and potato-free recipe is great for cats prone to food-related allergies
  • Highly palatable: even the pickiest eaters won’t be able to resist
  • Provides an excellent source of vitamin B12, riboflavin and phosphorus
Fussie Cat Market Fresh grain-free dry food comes in 3 flavors - chicken & turkey, salmon & chicken, and just plain salmon. I chose the chicken & turkey, and I pawsitively adore it!!! I've eaten it every single day since the bag arrived and it's now a regular part of my meal rotation. Once I've emptied the bag you can be sure we'll be ordering more!

By coming in a handy 2 pound bag anyone can give it a try without committing to a huge amount, and it's currently on sale for only $7.99! Once you make sure you like it, it's also available in 4 and 10 pound bags.

Chewy offers FREE 1-2 day shipping for orders over $49, and with over 500 brands in stock they have something sure to make every cat or dog happy. Tell them Mudpie sent you!
