Shopping with Truffles

Hey everybody, it's Truffles! Last month we heard about a fun blog hop hosted by Bacon the Pig and Fozziemum called “Shopping Around the World". Each month they post a list of 5 items to price in your area in order to find out what different things cost in various parts of the world. By the time we found out about it, it was too late to participate, but we immediately put it on our calendar for this time around.

Here are the 5 items for March, and what they cost here in Vermont:

1. Milk. This is a hot topic in my area because Vermont is a state with many dairy farms. (My grandpa actually grew up on a dairy farm!) We buy local - Monument Farms from Weybridge, VT - and paid $1.69 for a quart.

2. Tomatoes. My grandpa grows tomatoes in his garden every summer and they are super yummy. (Or so Mommy says...I don't eat tomatoes.) But in the winter we have to buy them at the market and they are no where near as good. We usually choose the hot house tomatoes, and right now they are $2.49/pound.

3. Canned Product. Hmm...what canned food do we always have in the house??? FANCY FEAST! We're currently getting a really good deal on my beloved FF - 50 cents a can at Shaw's through April!

4. Homemade Dish. Mommy always cooks a homemade meal on Sunday, and her favorite thing to make is Spinach Lasagna (We've tweaked this recipe a bit.) It's main components are oven ready lasagna noodles ($1.79), 8 oz. can of tomato sauce (49 cents), 6 oz. fan of tomato paste (59 cents), 10 oz. package of frozen chopped spinach (99 cents), packet of spaghetti sauce mix (50 cents), and cottage cheese ($2.49).

5. Random item of your choice. Trader Joe's Coffeehaus European Style Chocolate Yogurt...OMC Mommy is obsessed with this stuff!!! We have *stacks* of it in our fridge. It's 99 cents a cup, or in other words, TWO whole cans of Fancy Feast!!! (Mommy!!! I don't think we afford your yogurt obsession!!!)

How do these prices compare to those in your area? Do your humans have a food obsession that cuts into the kitty food budget?

  5. Funny! I, often, say the cats (and dogs) eat better, at my house, than we do! Don't worry, Truffles, you will never be without Fancy Feast! :)

  7. Our milk has been around $3.50-4.00 per gallon. Not sure about tomatoes. I don't usually pay attention to them until summertime, haha!

  8. We don't buy milk, but we pay $3.50 for half a gallon of almond milk! (sans carageenan from Trader Joe's.) Glad to see you got you TJ's out there! - Crepes.

  9. We will have to look at the costs of the food one day. Mom goes to the store and doesn't even look at the prices because she's afraid too. We try to stock up when we find the things we use all the time on sale.

  10. This is such a fun ting to do. We're going to have to join in one of these weeks. Oh, and we're obviously going to have to make a Trader Joe's run, too. MOL!

  11. I never know when this is gonna be. The peeps buy mostly store brand for themselves. They’re making baked ziti on Sunday—not The Cat’s fave meal—and have spent a ton of $$ even on sale. They need ricotta, moz, ziit, tomato gravy and sausage. The Cat gets FF only when it’s .50 per can.

  12. Wes don't has a Trader Joe's in our part of the world, Mommy says that yogurt sounds delicious. BUT she did buys a 12 pack of Fancy Feast *and it was NOT on sale) for $7.95 (Canadian + Tax) so that is like eventy million Dollars US (actually Nellie its only $6.30 US)
    Kisses
