while in theory I agree, and your graphic is darling, I do have to say something. It is more than just Black and HIspanic. I am a Jew. I know FIRST HAND what it is to be discriminated against. People HATE JEWS. My younger brother was beaten up on a daily basis by Jew-hating neighbors, forcing us to move to a predominantly Jewish community (he was all of 7)....I watched my parents cry when they tried to buy a home in a "Wasp'ish" closed community (before fair-housing)....no Jews were permitted. I have listened to people say "don't get "Jewed" when talking about people ripping them off. Millions of my people were slaughtered. SLAUGHTERED by a leader who spewed hate. My first husband was Catholic and called me a "Jewish Bitch." I know a hairdresser who basically won't have Jews as customers (other than my husband because he is insane and still goes to her), I have had guys in my past not date me because I am a JEW. I have a step daughter with spina bifida who was literally told last month (as she was being fired due to physical limitations, she walks funny, her hands are week, she also has mental health issues), that she was only hired to meet a "quota." It is more than Blacks and Hispanics....it is about acceptance of ALL who are "different." Unless one is discriminated against for something they cannot help, they do not know........if you have been, I am sorry you endured it as well.........if you haven't been....I pray you never have to be. It isn't just a "Black and Hispanic" issue, ....that's too easy, it is important to note that this comment is not written in hate or anger...but in hurt, it is way deeper than black and hispanic..........it is ACCEPTANCE OF ALL, Muslims, Gays, JEWS, DISABLED WITHOUT MOCKING THEM, THAT is AMERICAN,.........thank you and I pray for all of us.
I agree with you, Caren. Politicians in particular should eliminate all discrimination and bigotry from their rhetoric. It cheapens and denigrates our entire society. This country's backbone is built on immigrants. We are all equal in God's eyes-- regardless of color, creed, or life-style. And, we are ALL Americans. This country faces enormous problems--many are VERY, VERY complicated. There are no easy fixes. Globalization has left many feeling like outsiders, and scapegoating seems a "quick-fix." Patriotism is only cheap rhetoric unless ALL are included. (Only yesterday I met MANY "non-citizens" from Central and South America who have been serving valiantly in our military!!) I pray that our politicians do not forget they are "public servants" first and foremost, and that their jobs come with a great responsibility to represent ALL those who reside within our borders. I second your prayers, Caren...
