Crafted's Carefully Selected Creation Process #InspiredbyCrafted

This post is sponsored by Hill’s. I am being compensated for helping spread the word about Hill’s® Ideal Balance® CRAFTED, but Mochas, Mysteries and Meows only shares information we feel is relevant to our readers. Hill’s Pet Nutrition, Inc. is not responsible for the content of this article.

There has been a recent explosion in popularity of "ancient grains" in the American food market. Typically agreed to include amaranth, barley, bulgur, buckwheat, kamut, millet, spelt, teff and quinoa, these nutritional powerhouses are a staple in health food markets across the country. I found proof that ancient grains had officially hit the mainstream when I was browsing the cereal aisle at my local grocery store and stumbled upon a box of the new Cheerios & Ancient Grains cereal.

Ancient grains are perceived as the opposite of modern wheat, which is often heavily refined. They are viewed as more healthy, more natural and better for us, because they are rarely eaten in processed form. Many of the grains are also gluten-free, or at least low in gluten, which more and more consumers are demanding.

Ancient grains can also be highly beneficial to our pets. They are high in fiber, rich in protein, and packed with life-sustaining amino acids. They contain a broad spectrum of vitamins and minerals including B vitamins, zinc, magnesium and copper. Some contain phenols, which act as natural antioxidants, as well as omega 3 and 6 essential fatty acids. Some ancient grains even act as prebiotics and can be soothing to the digestive system, plus they help to maintain steady blood sugar levels.

Hill’s® understands that quality nutrition is important to pet parents, and that's why they created their new Ideal Balance® CRAFTED line using the same ingredients you would see in high-end, healthy human foods: high quality meats, wholesome vegetables and ancient grains.

Crafted's Carefully Selected Creation Process:

1) Carefully Selected: First, they begin with thoughtfully-sourced, select proteins and vegetables which are blended with distinctive ingredients like barley and chickpeas to create unique, flavorful recipes.

2) Crafted with Care: For dry cat food, craftsmen make sure all the ingredients are carefully mixed. The ingredient mix is then added to the dough and is now ready for cooking. For wet cat foods, broths, starches and flavorings are whisked together in a kettle, select meats and dry ingredients are prepared separately with the utmost care.

3) Gently Cooked: The meat, gravy and vegetables for wet cat foods are combined in mixers the same way you would make a stew. Then it’s canned and slow-cooked to lock in flavor and nutrition. For dry cat foods, the dough is gently cooked to lock in flavor and nutrition. It’s cut into crispy, custom-shaped kibble that cat’s love.

I can personally attest that Truffles has been eating the Grain-Free Herbed Chicken & Chickpeas recipe for a month now and she absolutely adores it. A sample of the canned Chicken Pot Pie with Buckwheat is currently on it's way to us and we're looking forward to trying that as well. (Is it weird that the flavors make my own mouth water???)

As much as I would love to cook for Truffles at home, I simply don't have the time or the knowledge. That's why I'm happy to have companies like Hill's around with a team of highly trained veterinary nutritionists who deliver the ultimate in nutrition that is as close to homemade as possible.

Book Review & Giveaway: Flourless to Stop Him by Nancy J. Parra

From the publisher: The author of Murder Gone A-Rye and Gluten for Punishment returns to Oiltop, Kansas, where gluten-free baker Toni Holmes has to separate the wheat from the chaff to clear her brother of murder…

It’s never a good time for a crisis. Toni’s busy whipping up gluten-free holiday treats when a murder forces her to put baking on the back burner. A dead man has been found in the bathtub of a local inn—in a room registered to her brother, Tim.

With her sibling now a prime suspect in a mysterious homicide, Toni is determined to find out who set him up. But she’s about to get some unwanted assistance from former investigative journalist Grandma Ruth, who won’t let anything slow her progress in running down a killer…

The first two books in Nancy J. Parra's Baker's Treat mystery series have been in my TBR pile for awhile now, but I decided to jump in with this once since it's set at Christmas. What on earth have I been waiting for??? I loved every single minute of this mouth-watering mystery.

Toni returned home to Oiltop, Kansas following her mother's death and moved into her family's Victorian mansion. Her doors are always open to any of her 50+ relatives. Her brother Tim has recently moved out and finally getting his life together, but that all comes crashing down when a dead body is found in the bathtub of the inn Toni's BFF Tasha manages, and the room is registered to Tim. The police start considering the murder a drug deal gone wrong when drugs are found stashed away in Toni's garage and evidence surfaces of a series of hotel registrations all under Tim's name.

The star of the show here is Grandma Ruth, a scooter-driving, blog-writing, eccentric nonagenarian. She is an absolute riot and had me in stitches on more than one occasion. Toni's cousin Mindy is another standout character, visiting from NYC and harboring some secrets of her own.

Toni's gluten-free baking of her delectable treats during the Christmas season is just icing on the cake. I devoured every page and am ready for more!

The Naming of Cats

As T.S. Eliot writes in his 1930s classic, Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats, "The Naming of Cats is a difficult matter." It recently occurred to me that Truffles is the first cat I've named myself!

My childhood cat Patch was named by my parents before I was born. Sebastian, our neighborhood rescue, had already had his name for 10+ years and it seemed to fit his "dignified tuxedo gentleman" appearance. Sashi was the first cat I adopted at the shelter and her previous owners had named her. I kept it because it was so unusual and beautiful. Tara was originally named Kelly at the shelter. No offense to everyone named Kelly out there, but this cat needed something much more special. It was my mother who thought of Tara, because of our mutual love for Gone with the Wind.

Then came little miss Truffles. I had decided long before we met that my next tortie's name would be Mocha, but as soon as I saw her she reminded me of a tiny, delicate little chocolate truffle. I guess Mocha will just have to wait...

So what got me to thinking about cat names? I recently received a fun infographic from Rover.com about top cat names and what naming trends reveal about cat people.

My favorite finding: dog parents are more likely to name their dogs after booze. Cat parents prefer to name their cats after desserts. Looks like I got that one right!

How have you chosen your cats' names? Are any of them on this list?

Book Review & Giveaway: Hiss and Tell by Claire Donally

In this Sunny & Shadow Mystery from the New York Times bestselling author of Last Licks, a fat-cat wedding is making waves in Kittery Harbor, Maine.

Political heiress Priscilla Kingsbury is about to marry Carson de Kruk, son of business mogul Augustus de Kruk, at the Kingsburys’ waterfront compound. For reporter Sunny Coolidge, an assignment from the Harbor Courier to cover the event is like catnip.

But when Sunny photographs men pulling the body of a dead woman out of the water, the Kingsburys’ private security isn’t happy. They claim the woman’s death was an accident, but the story seems fishy. Now, with a little help from her police officer boyfriend and her cunning cat Shadow, Sunny is determined to get the scoop on a killer.

In this 4th book in the Sunny & Shadow mystery series, Sunny gets a chance to return to her reporter days when she's embedded on a waterfront compound during preparations for a high society wedding. Of course a body turns up and Sunny is thrown right into the midst of chaos. Before it's over a second shocking murder occurs and we're left with the equivalent of a "locked room" mystery on a peninsula cut off from the mainland by a checkpoint and guards.

This has been one of my favorite cat cozy series from the very beginning, and a completely under-rated one at that, but I have to say that I was slightly disappointed in this one. What I love about this series is the relationship between Shadow, Sunny, and Sunny's father Mike who she has returned home to care for following a bad heart attack. Too much of the action in this book took Sunny away from her little family unit, with Mike practically an afterthought, and while Shadow makes his way onto the compound, he and Sunny are apart for much of the book. I still highly recommend the mystery, which had me guessing until the very end, I just hope the next book finds Sunny back home with her family.

The cover art is a hysterical scene straight out of the book, where Shadow helps himself to some hors-d'oeuvre while in the presence of a silly old ailurophobe. Another priceless scene comes following the killer's capture...you won't believe what Shadow does to him/her!!! That Shadow is a cat after my own heart :)

Hey everybody, it's Truffles! My good friend Crockett over at the Lone Star Cats blog is famous for blowing raspberries at the camera.

He always looks so cute that I thought I'd give it a try.

How did I do?

Caturday Art: Run for the Roses

Hey everybody, Truffles at the keyboard! Happy Kentucky Derby Day!!! Our Caturday Art today was created in honor of the Run for the Roses. We applied the Rapture effect in PicMonkey to one of Mommy's favorite pictures of me, and then we added a rose frame from Pho.to.

I think it turned out just gorgeous!

Speaking of the Kentucky Derby, have you seen the video produced by TVG of the very first CATucky Derby? It's hysterical, and SO true!

Will you be watching the Derby today? Are you hoping for a Triple Crown this year as much as we are?

Getting Cozy in a SkratchKabin

I never thought I'd see the day when I would be more excited to see the UPS man deliver a package for Truffles than for me, but that's exactly what happened when she was offered the opportunity to try out a SkratchKabin.

Image: KatKabin

You may be familiar with the original KatKabin outdoor cat house, designed to give cats all the comfort and safety they are used to indoors. Standing above the ground, it provides a warm, cozy outdoor shelter for napping, stretching and relaxing in all weather conditions. The standard version comes with a removable KatFlap and a washable KatKushion. It is also available in a double door version and as a premium combination with a washable fleecy Winter Warmer which lines the internal body of the KatKabin for added insulation.

Since Truffles is an indoor cat, we received the brand new SkratchKabin, an innovative cat bed with a curved, textured scratching surface and washable cat cushion.  It also comes with a free toy hanger and sisal mouse toy and is available in 3 colors: oatmeal, blueberry, and cocoa. We chose the cocoa which perfectly matches our living room.

Our ScratchKabin arrived (already completely assembled) in a ginormous box, which Truffles busied herself with while I took a moment to admire just how adorable and stylish this piece of cat furniture is. I am completely in love with the cat shape right down to the ears, whiskers, and feet.

Of course, the most important thing is how Truffles feels about her new SkratchKabin:

This looks interesting...

I'm going in.

Excuse me while I straighten things up a little and make myself comfortable.

It's super cozy!

There's even room for a toy or two!

Nap time!

I guess it's pretty obvious that she absolutely loves it. I wondered how quickly she would take to it since she's never slept in anything closed in, but she climbed into it immediately and she spends time in her SkratchKabin every single day. It's even roomy enough for her to take a bath or play in!

SkratchKabins provide cats with a cozy, secluded place of their own to snooze and exercise their natural instinct to scratch while protecting your carpet and furniture. All versions are available in a beautiful range of colors that can either blend in or stand out in your garden, outdoor area or home. Wherever you choose to put yours, this is one cat house that makes a stunning design statement!

Instead of providing a giveaway to one winner, the KatKabin people are generously offering a special discount to our readers so that you can get order whatever product you would like. Just go to the KatKabin site and at checkout, enter the promotional code REF86Q84 to receive 20% off your purchase. This offer is valid for the entire month of May. The prices range from $99.00 to $129.00 for the Kabins and the accessories range from $9.99 to $49.99, so this is the purr-fect opportunity to treat the fashionable feline in your life to something extra special.
