Games with Grapes

Meows from Mudpie!

I'm a pretty simple girl; I'm likely to make a toy out of just about anything. My favorite thing to play with right now is a long stick from the back yard that Mommy pokes in and out of a piece of tissue paper.

The other night Mommy was eating a bowl of grapes while watching TV and when she set them down I decided they might be fun to play with too!

I started by sticking my paw in the bowl but the grapes were still damp and my foot got wet! I didn't like that so I decided to swat at them through the bowl instead.

Of course Mommy thought it was super cute and couldn't grab the iPawd fast enough.

* It's important to note that grapes are toxic to cats and dogs. Mommy knows that I would never try to eat one but I was never left alone with the bowl. *

What weird things have your kitties played with lately?

Celebrate Tabbies on April 30th #NationalTabbyDay

It may be hard to believe, but not all of my cats have been torties. The first 15 years of my life were spent with a handsome tabby named Patch, so I know how special these cats are.

Just like with tortoiseshell cats, tabbies are not a breed but a coat pattern. There are four tabby coat patterns: classic, mackerel, spotted, and ticked. Unique to all tabbies is the distinctive “M” on their forehead. One legend states that Baby Jesus wouldn’t stop crying until a cat climbed into the manger and started to purr, sending him off to sleep. And in gratitude, the Virgin Mary marked the cat’s face with the first letter of her name.

Tabbies have long been pop culture favorites. Two of the most famous cats in the world are tabbies: Morris and Garfield! Many major pet brands use both grey and orange tabbies in their brand advertising. Friskies has an Orange tabby and so does Meow Mix, Arm and Hammer cat litter and Fresh Step.

To celebrate tabbies the very first National Tabby Day will be taking place on April 30th. Festivities kick off at one of NYC’s most reputable shelters, Bideawee, with adoptions will running from 10 am – 6 pm and a special celebration from 12-2 p.m. Anyone adopting from the shelter on the 30th will be given a generous starter kit with items for their new pet from the event’s sponsors.

The celebration will feature the official book launch of Making the Most of All Nine Lives: The Extraordinary Life of Buffy the Cat, who is the spokescat of National Tabby Day. Born into the body of an orange tabby, Buffy has experienced life in a way most humans never do. Making the Most of All Nine Lives documents Buffy as he hits the golf course, votes, gasses up the car and hits the road, builds a snowman, and a wide variety of many other human situations. This is without a doubt one of the most adorable cat books I've ever had the pleasure of reading. Between the photography by Buffy's dad Paul Smulson (completely without digital manipulation) and the "catlish" provided by pet lifestyle expert Sandy Robins, this is a book sure to make cat lovers everywhere purr with delight. The cuteness is off the charts.

The hashtag for this special event is #NationalTabbyDay. Let's get it trending!

Tortie Shorties on Mystery Monday

Welcome to this week's edition of Tortie Shorties on Mystery Monday!

We hope you enjoy our choices.

From the publisher: Quincy the butterscotch tabby has a talent for sniffing out sweets—and uncovering crimes—in this Fat Cat mystery from the national bestselling author of Fat Cat Spreads Out.

When their former classmate Richard “Dickie” Byrd throws a high school reunion to gather support for his mayoral campaign, it drums up some not-so-sweet memories for dessert shop proprietor Chase Oliver and her friend Julie Larson. Julie would rather not reconnect with Ron North, the creepy kid who had a crush on her back in the day. His social graces haven’t exactly improved with age, but is he creepy enough to kill?

The next day, Chase is in the park testing a new cat harness for Quincy, who quickly proves that he cannot be leashed. But when his escape leads Chase to Ron’s body, the police wonder who else got away. Now, with Julie suspected of murder, Chase must prove her innocence before the real killer plans another fatal reunion.

Tortie Shorties Review: The third book in this series starring Quincy the scene-stealing tabby finding yet another dead body following a very tense high school reunion/political rally thrown by Chase's former classmate Dickie Byrd. Chase and her best friend Julie hate the thoughts of coming face to face with another ghost from their past, Ron North, who stalked Julie while they were in high school. Ron is now a reporter with the local paper and just as creepy as ever, so it's hardly surprising when his body is found by Quincy in the bushes following the ill-fated event. The trouble is he was strangled with Julie's scarf, making her the main suspect. His notebook, left behind at the reunion, holds a wealth of clues leading to other possible suspects...except Quincy gets his paws on a sheet that falls out!

In addition to clearing her best friend of murder, Chase is still juggling two men, preparing for her business partner's upcoming nuptials and helping her prepare for the Minny Batter Battle baking competition. Oh, and she's also attempting to leash train Quincy!!! (There are leash training tips for your own cat at the back of the book too!)

There's a lot going on here but it's a very fast-paced mystery. Quincy is as always the star of the show and I couldn't turn the pages fast enough eagerly anticipating what mischief the flabby tabby would get into next!

From the publisher: The residents of Llanelen are brimming with excitement. Antiques Cymru, a regional take on the popular national TV show, is coming to the Welsh town and people are flocking from miles around, hoping their attic treasures turn out to be worth a fortune. On the day of filming, quiet local sheep farmer Haydn Williams brings a generations-old long-case clock for evaluation, while the woman he’s always admired from afar, Catrin Bellis, turns up with a cherished handmade quilt. Will either hear surprising good news about the value of their family heirlooms? By the end of the day, Catrin turns up dead, her quilt missing.

Who could have wanted this shy, quiet woman – who had been overshadowed by her parents for her whole life – dead? Delving into Catrin’s past, spa owner and amateur sleuth Penny Brannigan is surprised to discover that Catrin had at least one enemy. And as Penny’s romantic life heats up with a new love interest, she realizes that a mysterious document hidden in Haydn’s clock could hold the key to a long-forgotten secret and a present-day murder.

Murder on the Hour is a light-hearted traditional mystery featuring a charming heroine set in an enchanting Welsh town.

Tortie Shorties Review: I've only read one other book in this series but the day this one arrived in my mailbox for possible review the cover alone was practically begging me to read it. I answered the call and am so happy that I did.

I'm a huge Antiques Roadshow fan so was delighted that the backdrop of Murder on the Hour is the Welsh version of the popular show. Everyone is town is scurrying around their attics searching for the perfect item to have appraised. For sheep farmer Haydn Williams it's a clock; for Catrin Bellis it's a quilt. Little do they know that a secret from long ago links these two antiques and ends up getting Catrin murdered.

I adored the slice of village life that is presented in this mystery, where we meet fun characters such as gossipy former postmistress Mrs Lloyd and her roommate Florence and eccentric healer Dilys. I instantly became intrigued and attached to the victim, Catrin, who is finally coming into her own after a lifetime of caring for her smothering parents. Her life is sadly cut way too short just as she's starting to flourish.

Murder on the Hour is the seventh in the Penny Brannigan series but can easily be read as a stand-alone. It has definitely whet my appetite to catch up on previous books. You won't find a much "cozier cozy" anywhere and I have completely fallen in love with the town of Llanelen and it's residents.

Missing Merle #CaturdayArt

Meows from Mudpie!

There's always country music playing at our house so we were incredibly saddened by the death of Merle Haggard on Wednesday. He passed away on his birthday! There's something especially cruel yet strangely beautiful about that.

Our Caturday Art this week is in black & white in his honor.

Mommy got to see Merle in concert about 15 years ago right here in Burlington. Her favorite song of his is The Fightin' Side of Me and her favorite performance of that song is this duet version with Toby Keith (who she's been lucky enough to see 3 times in concert!)

The Pet Blogger Bloopers Round-Up – April

Meows from Mudpie!

Today we're joining the The Pet Blogger Bloopers Round-Up, hosted by The Lazy Pit Bull. It's the place to be on the second Friday of each month to see your favorite bloggers' blooper photos. This is a blog hop dedicated to showcasing the results of those photo sessions that have gone off the rails!

Mommy recently decided she would like me to start posing with each book that we review. To say that I had little interest in the idea would be putting it mildly.

Win a One Year Subscription to the Cat Sticker Club!

As a little girl growing up in the '80s I was obsessed with stickers. My lunchbox, notebooks, folders, and Trapper Keeper (remember those?) were covered with them. Along with the popular characters of the time like Strawberry Shortcake and My Little Pony, many of those stickers were cats...of course!

Stickers are fun for adults too and my passion for them has been reignited thanks to the Cat Sticker Club, a monthly cat sticker subscription service. Cat Sticker Club curates cute cat art, creates high-quality stickers, and brightens up your mailbox every month. It’s a fun little way to show your feline love or make your favorite cat lover smile. And it’s only $3.50 per month!

The Cat Sticker Club asks people to submit photos of their stickers in action on Instagram and Twitter using the hashtag #catstickerclub. Here's what we've been up to:

Each sticker is 3-4” wide on average and made from weatherproof, durable vinyl. They are designed by artists who are paid for their work, plus 10% of the profits go to shelters and rescues!!!

Laptops, tablets, litter boxes, cat carriers, water bottles, car bumpers, bulletin boards...the list of places you can put a sticker is endless. Just don't stick them on kitty!!!
