Tortie Shorties: Christmas Edition

Meows from Mudpie!

There's still time to make yourself a mug of cocoa, stick a candy cane in it, and indulge in a festive Christmas read with a kitty (or three!) on your lap. We've been doing a lot of that lately and wanted to tell you about some of our favorites!

From the publisher: To the townspeople’s delight, the annual lighting of the tree is a spectacular success. Unfortunately, Santa pulled up in his sleigh, DOA. At first Stan is sure it’s Seamus, her boyfriend’s uncle, inside the red suit. But the victim turns out to be an employee from the town’s Christmas tree farm. Rumor has it the deceased was a mean drunk with a soft spot for feral cats. Stan has no idea why he was dressed as St. Nick—or why he’s dead.

Meanwhile, Seamus, a jolly Irishman who comes to America every December to visit his pub-owner nephew, is nowhere to be found. Could he just be off on a Boston bar crawl? Or is something more sinister under the tree? Seamus was supposed to be dressing up and posing for pet pictures with Santa at the shop, but the dogs and cats might have to find another lap to curl up in if Stan doesn’t solve two mysteries soon. Or murder might be the only thing under the mistletoe this holiday . . .

Tortie Shorties Review: This is a book I've been looking forward to since the end of the previous book in the series as readers are invited to the unofficial opening of Stan's Pawsitively Organic Pet Patisserie on the same night as the town's Christmas tree lighting ceremony. What could go wrong? Turns out quite a bit, as Santa is DOA in his sleigh. Stan is horrified because her boyfriend Jake's Uncle Seamus is supposed to be playing Santa, but that's not who has been murdered. The victim is Harold, another resident of Frog's Ledge -  and he has been poisoned by the apple cider made specifically for Santa - cider that was made by Stan's good friend Izzy. Seamus's whereabouts are unknown, and it's nearly impossible to even know who the intended victim was because both men had their enemies. Stan has her hands full trying to get her new business off the ground, entertaining a houseful of Jake's family members, and getting to the bottom of a very complicated set of circumstances. By the cliffhanger on the final page there's lots of excitement still to come for Stan too! Another great story in one of my favorite cozy series.

From the publisher: Charles Dickens is not feeling the Christmas spirit. His newest book is an utter flop, the critics have turned against him, relatives near and far hound him for money. While his wife plans a lavish holiday party for their ever-expanding family and circle of friends, Dickens has visions of the poor house. But when his publishers try to blackmail him into writing a Christmas book to save them all from financial ruin, he refuses. And a serious bout of writer’s block sets in.

Frazzled and filled with self-doubt, Dickens seeks solace in his great palace of thinking, the city of London itself. On one of his long night walks, in a once-beloved square, he meets the mysterious Eleanor Lovejoy, who might be just the muse he needs. As Dickens’ deadlines close in, Eleanor propels him on a Scrooge-like journey that tests everything he believes about generosity, friendship, ambition, and love. The story he writes will change Christmas forever.

Tortie Shorties Review: Mr. Dickens and His Carol is a love letter to the greatest Christmas story ever told. (Well, other than *the* Christmas story, of course.) This book is written so vividly that I felt as though I were walking alongside Dickens through the streets of London on a dark, wintry night, meeting the characters that would inspire his classic tale. While a work of fiction the background on Dickens' life at the time (which I was completely unaware of) provided a sense of historical accuracy and the Victorian atmosphere is spot on. I think Mr. Dickens would be proud to see his work still relevant today, and that his characters continue to inspire our imaginations. Mr. Dickens and His Carol will always have a special spot on my shelf of A Christmas Carol memorabilia.

Purrfect Santa by Nic Saint: Chase’s grandfather is missing, and he asks Odelia to help find him. And since Odelia’s editor has told her to find out who the new Hampton Cove Santa is, she gladly agrees. After traipsing all over New York City in search of Grandpa Kingsley, and the new Santa, they have to declare defeat. Lucky for them, there’s still Max and Dooley, Odelia’s feline sleuths. Will they find out what happened to Grandpa Kingsley? And will they figure out who the new Santa is? Get into the holiday spirit with Max and Odelia and find out in Purrfect Santa.

Purrfect Christmas Mystery by Nic Saint: When Odelia’s mailwoman doesn’t show up one morning, Max and Dooley are worried something might have happened to her. Bambi Wiggins is their favorite letter carrier, after all, as she always comes bearing treats and cuddles. So the fearsome feline duo set out through the snow and sleet of pre-Christmas Hampton Cove, in search of Bambi. When they finally find her, they’re in for a big surprise, and a genuine Christmas miracle.

Purrfect Christmas Miracle by Nic Saint: It is the night before Christmas, and not a creature in the house is stirring… except for Max and Dooley, wondering if Santa Claus is human or feline! To decide the point, Max convinces Dooley to go up on the roof and prove once and for all that Santa is a cat. Heavy snowfall soon thwarts the brave feline sleuths’ plans, and they’re forced to return indoors, where it’s warm and dry. Their efforts are soon rewarded, however, as they unexpectedly discover Santa’s true identity, and it’s definitely not what they expected!

Tortie Shorties Review: The Mysteries of Max series is one of my favorite finds of the year, and this trio of Christmas stories is nothing short of magical. The three are connected, but only Purrfect Santa is available on AmazonPurrfect Christmas Mystery and Purrfect Christmas Miracle, written from the viewpoint of Max, are available exclusively to mailing list subscribers: nicsaint.com/newsletter. Odeilia is searching for the town's new Santa, Chase is looking for his grandfather, and precious Max and Dooley are desperate to find their beloved mail carrier. Everything is solved on a Christmas Eve no one will ever forget.

From the publisher: Matthew has a very special gift for new girlfriend Beatrice Young this holiday season. Except his plans are foiled when a mugger tackles him on a dark street and steals the surprise present! He can't exactly involve Beatrice is his recovery plans—but thankfully her four crime-solving cats are more than up to the task, not to mention Sheriff Roy and the rest of the Ashbrook, New Hampshire community.

When other big ticket gifts are stolen in broad daylight, the crew knows that someone truly desperate is on the loose. Can Matthew recover his secret gift in time? And how the heck is Beatrice going to find time to plan her annual Christmas Day party with all this nonsense going on?!

Tortie Shorties Review :Prefer your Christmas cozies without the bloodshed? Then this is the book for you! Beatrice and her four cats are hot on the trail of a Yuletide mugger who is stealing high end Christmas gifts...including her own that she's not even supposed to know about! Never a dull moment in Beatrice's little world...

From the publisher: Trouble, the Sherlock of black cat detective, finds himself in Turnout, MS on Christmas Eve. Teddy Adamson, that heart breaker, has just walked back into Billie Dean Bailey’s life. But more dire happenings are going on under the mistletoe. Who ends up dead and why? Was it the maraschino cherries in the Tizzington sisters’ fruit compote? Or was it something more sinister?

Tortie Shorties Review: Trouble is left in the care of Billie Dean Bailey over the holidays where he accompanies her to work each day to the used car dealership her father owns. The small business is in serious financial trouble, but that's not Billie Dean's only worry. Teddy, her former love is back in town visiting his mother for the holidays and their feelings for each other are still strong. When murder strikes at a Christmas party Teddy, Billie Dean and Trouble team up to uncover the criminal element that has taken hold right under their noses at the car dealership. Short but satisfying seasonal story.

From the publisher: How do you find a killer when everyone in town has a motive? That's the question pie-baker extraordinaire Cinnamon Peters and the rest of the cozy little mountain town of Christmas River are asking this December.
After Moira Stewart -- the town's worst gossip -- is found dead of unnatural causes one snowy morning, rumors begin swirling like snowflakes in a blizzard about her unexpected demise.
But not everything is as it seems in Christmas River this holiday season. And in a town where everyone stands to gain from Moira's death, Cinnamon and her husband Sheriff Brightman find themselves stumbling into dangerous and deadly territory.
Because this December, the weather outside is frightful...
And so is the murder.

Tortie Shorties Review: Although I've collected each book in this series thanks to the adorable gingerbread man covers alone, this is surprisingly the first one I've read, and I ended up finding myself lost in the coziest little Christmas world imaginable. From the very first scene I caught myself smiling at the antics of the intended victim - crotchety, conniving octogenarian Moira Stewart - right up until the moment she got whacked upside the head with a snow shovel. There's no shortage of suspects as Moira had a nasty blackmail hobby and protagonist pie shop owner Cinnamon and her sheriff hubby have their hands full weeding through the suspects. I loved the Christmas atmosphere throughout the entire book, especially in the antics of Cinnamon's feisty grandfather Walter. Festive fun!

Cover Reveal ~ Clowders by Vanessa Morgan

Clowders
Vanessa Morgan
Publication date: March 1st 2018
Genres: Adult, Supernatural, Thriller
Clervaux, Luxembourg. This secluded, picturesque town in the middle of Europe is home to more cats than people. For years, tourists have flocked to this place – also known as “cat haven” – to meet the cats and buy cat-related souvenirs.
When Aidan, Jess and their five-year-old daughter, Eleonore, move from America to Clervaux, it seems as if they’ve arrived in paradise. It soon becomes clear, though, that the inhabitants’ adoration of their cats is unhealthy. According to a local legend, each time a cat dies, nine human lives are taken as a punishment. To tourists, these tales are supernatural folklore, created to frighten children on cold winter nights. But for the inhabitants of Clervaux, the danger is darkly, horrifyingly real.
Initially, Aidan and Jess regard this as local superstition, but when Jess runs over a cat after a night out in the town, people start dying, one by one, and each time it happens, a clowder of cats can be seen roaming the premises.
Are they falling victim to the collective paranoia infecting the entire town? Or is something horrible waiting for them? Something unspeakably evil.
Aidan and Jess’ move to Europe may just have been the worst decision they ever made.

2. I love the snow, but I also complain a lot about it too. I'm not a big fan of cleaning off cars and shoveling.

Mudpie's answers:

3. One holiday memory that I cherish is my first Christmas in my forever home. Mommy was sure I would tear the tree down but I never laid a paw on it!

Celebrate the Season of Giving with Miranda Lambert and MuttNation

Yesterday we shared some ideas on how to brighten the lives of shelter cats during the Christmas season. We hope it helped everyone find something they can do to give back during this season of giving because that's what it's all about. Today I'd like to tell you a little about a program in my area called Claus for Paws which asks the community to help fulfill the Christmas wish lists of animals waiting for their forever homes.

Each year 3 local rescue groups are chosen to receive donations that are dropped off at specially marked “Claus for Paws” donation crates at local businesses. Cleaning supplies, bedding, food, collars & leashes, toys - all simple wishes that often go unfulfilled or add up to a substantial expense. All items that can easily be donated to make life easier for shelter workers and the precious cargo in their care.

I have an amazing shelter within walking distance of my house, yet Tara and Truffles were adopted from a shelter an hour north of me, and Mudpie from one an hour east. While I love to support these amazing groups as a thank you to them for giving me my sweet girls, it's just not that easy for me to get to them, so these donation crates are so convenient. As luck would have it, Tara and Truffles' shelter was a Claus for Paws recipient last year (as was Sashi's small rescue), and Mudpie's Alma mater is one this year! The program has become a huge success, with nearly 2,500 donated items collected totaling close to $15,000 last year alone!

Here's Mudpie's wonderful vet with a donation bin at his office!

As cat bloggers we always have extra cat stuff around the house, and anything we don't have I have so much fun shopping for. (Most women thrive on clothes and shoe shopping. I find my bliss in bookstores and pet stores.) Choosing just the right items for our doggie friends is more of a challenge though...

Earlier this month I received an email from Petmate® with information about their holiday MuttNation™ Fueled by Miranda Lambert Collection. Every purchase in this line of toys, collars, harnesses and beds helps fund the rescue and adoption programs of MuttNation Foundation. To help shine the spotlight on rescue animals and shelters, Miranda and her mom Bev Lambert founded MuttNation Foundation in 2009 to ensure that as many dogs as possible would have a safe and happy place to call home. All of Miranda’s proceeds from the MuttNation pet collection go directly to the MuttNation Foundation. You can be assured that your giving is going directly to helping homeless dogs find new homes.

New products for 2017 include a vintage styled treat tin, treat toys in the shapes of guitars, cowgirl boots and microphones, an all-American baseball tug toy, stylish bedding, and the cutest collection of Mini Rescue Mutts plush toys based on real rescue stories. The MuttNation collection offers pet lovers a wonderful opportunity to give back to the rescue community while giving love to their own special four-legged family members...or by donating items from the collection to their favorite shelter, which is what we'll be doing!

Petmate is generously sending us these two amazing beds, scheduled to arrive next week, just in time to be delivered to our nearest Claus for Paws donation bin!

We're so happy that in addition to the cat supplies we would automatically be donating, that we'll also be able to provide two beautiful beds that will allow some shelter animals (because there's no reason why they can't be used as cat beds too!) to stay warm this winter.

If you still have some Christmas shopping to do for your four-legged friends, we hope you'll check out what MuttNation has to offer...and our paws are crossed that Miranda comes out with a product line for cats by next Christmas!

The Purrfect 10: Ways to Brighten the Lives of Shelter Cats This Christmas

We love reading and researching anything and everything about cats, and wanted to find a fun and unique way to share the interesting facts we learn with you! Since top 10 lists are very popular in the blogosphere, we created The Purrfect 10 as a way to present 10 educational or fascinating tidbits about a wide variety of cat-related topics, everything from health issues to cat breeds to famous felines.

Cats love Christmas too, wouldn't you agree? Our precious fur babies may not understand the reasons why we're in such a festive mood but I have no doubt that they're picking up on the fact it's not "business as usual" in our homes.

This got me to thinking about all the kitties still waiting in shelters for their forever homes, and why shouldn't they have the opportunity to enjoy our most joyous of holidays too? These are cats who won't have a Christmas unless someone brings it to them, so this month's edition of The Purrfect 10 features some ideas to help brighten their lives.

1) Play Santa Kitty for your local shelter by bringing them a donation of toys and treats. (Small toys work best so you can buy more, but a few wand toys work great too.) Are you throwing a holiday party this year? Ask your guests to bring a donation in lieu of a hostess gift. Then spend an afternoon socializing with the kitties and playing with their new goodies. I guarantee you'll end the day just as happy as the cats!

2) Let Amazon play Santa for you. Thanks to the wonders of Amazon Prime you can have anything delivered anywhere with no shipping charges, plus they'll include a gift receipt for you too! For instance, Tara and Truffles' Alma mater is a good one hour drive north for me, but I always like to send them a little something at Christmas. Last year during the holidays they put out a call on Facebook for their mascot kitty's special diet food, so we hopped over to Amazon and bought them a bag, and also threw in a case of their favorite wet food and a fun pack of 20 assorted toys. 48 hours later our gift was delivered to their door!

3) Use Amazon Smile when shopping at Amazon.com so a portion of your purchase is donated to your favorite rescue or shelter. Simply access smile.amazon.com and select a shelter from their list, then shop as you normally would. Every eligible purchase you make at smile.amazon.com will result in a donation of 0.5% of the purchase price. (I was recently asked to write a guest blog for Place for Cats in NYC with my cat books recommendations using the rescue's Amazon Smile links.)

4) Create an Amazon Wish List for your shelter and share it with your friends and followers on social media. A local couple did this recently as a surprise for our shelter and ended up donating a whopping 32 cases of wet cat food and a box of miscellaneous toys and treats!

5) Do you enjoy DIY projects? Throw a crafting party to make bunches of cat toys and blankets, or even cat trees, scratching posts and wall shelves to "catify" the shelter. Everything can be donated to the cats or sold with proceeds earmarked for your shelter.

6) Is your cat getting a new bed or cat tree for Christmas? If their old one is still in good shape consider donating it to your favorite rescue!

7) Winter gets cold and cats love to snuggle in blankets. If you have any used but still in good condition blankies around your house, toss them in the washing machine and donate them. Towels work too!

8) All cats love to scratch, but for shelter cats, having a scratch pad can be especially beneficial. Scratching stretches muscles and helps alleviate stress and anxiety, and cats who learn to scratch in an appropriate place are less likely to be declawed or returned. Unfortunately, enrichment items like scratchers can be expensive and aren't always in the budget, which is why Imperial Cat started their Scratch 'n Bits program in 2009. Made from pieces of cardboard left over during the manufacturing process, Scratch 'n Bits vary in size and shape and can be shipped by the case to the shelter of your choice.

9) Grab a bunch of Christmas stockings at the dollar store, one for each cat cage (or dog kennel!) Ask the shelter to encourage visitors to stuff the stockings with toys and other goodies. When the animal is adopted their stocking can go home with them!

10) Foster a cat or kitten for Christmas. Have you ever read the book A Dog Named Christmas by Greg Kincaid? In the story a shelter seeks temporary homes for its dogs during the days leading to Christmas in an effort to clear the shelter for the holidays when there is not enough staff available to care for the animals. This not only alleviates the pressure on shelter workers but also gives the cat or dog a sneak peek of what Christmas in their forever home will be like...and who knows, maybe you'll end up discovering you can't live without each other! Wouldn't that be the greatest Christmas gift of all?

We can all do something to shower shelter animals with love and gifts at a time when they might otherwise be forgotten. After all, shelter cats love Christmas too!

Have you done something special for your favorite shelter this holiday season?
Tell us about it!
