Meows from Mudpie!
We have some news to share. Last Tuesday we found out that I'm diabetic. Yep, I'm a sugar kitty. Just when you thought I couldn't possibly get any sweeter, right?
It's not really a surprise given that I'm so, um, fluffy, but it's still not anything you're prepared to hear.
Here's the thing - I've been obsessed with water my whole life. Mommy likes to say that I'm a "heavy drinker". Still there are times she wonders if I drink too much. Back in the late spring/early summer she decided to use my grandpa's glucose meter to check my sugar, just for her peace of mind. She was so relieved to see it was normal.
Over the past few weeks though she's been getting concerned again because there were times I would drink from my bowl for what seemed like 3 solid minutes. And this is kind of embarrassing but I've leaked pee on my blankie a few times overnight too. A week ago Friday (the same day grandpa was discharged from the hospital) Mommy checked my sugar again and was devastated to see that it was sky high.
Off to the vet I went on Tuesday morning and the diagnosis was confirmed. (My kidney values were off a bit too, but the vet said it may be because of dehydration from the diabetes. It's something we'll have to watch.) Wednesday we had to go back so Mommy could get a refresher course on giving insulin injections. (You may remember Angel Tara was diabetic too.)
I received my first shot on Wednesday night and by Friday morning my sugar had already dropped significantly! The vet said that was phenomenal. I'm handling the shots very well, but I'm not a fan of Mommy testing my sugar by using a lancet on my ear. I'm very squirmy when she tries to do that. We're still trying to figure out what will work for us because we know it's important for Mommy to check my sugar regularly.
The good news is over the past several months I've finally decided wet food is pretty good which is important because kibble isn't good for sugar kitties. Mommy is still giving me a little kibble as a treat so I don't have to go cold turkey, but I'm eating wet food 90% of the time. Hopefully I won't change my mind and suddenly decide it's gross again!
Needless to say, Mommy is a basket case. She always figured this would happen one day, but it's the last thing we need right now while grandpa still isn't doing well. I'm doing my best to try to keep her calm and reassure her we'll get through this together.

Oh goodness, that's not the good kind of sweet. I'm glad you and your mom are handling things well. We had a diabetic kitty for many years and know how stressful things can be. Hopefully you'll settle in to a routine soon and won't need many ear pricks.
Mudpie, you've got the bestest meowmy, and she's gonna take care of you!
Mudpie we are so sorry to hear this. We know you're a terrific girl and that you'll let your mommy take the very best care of you. She probably does feel a little bit like pulling her hair out. But of course that won't help anything. You be sure to give your mommy lots of head bops and purrs. And we will certainly keep you in our prayers.
Yes, you are a sweetheart, a sweetie pie and sweet in every way ... but sad and sorry to learn that the "sweetness" thing has also become a bit of an issue in other ways. Take care now ...
I am sorry you have diabetes now. I think you can get a glucose meter put on at the vet so she won't have to keep picking you. XO
We send you and Mommy purrayers and POTP as you deal with just another side effect of getting older (we and our huMom know this all too well !)
Dear Mudpie, your Mommy has experience with this and she will take the bestest care of you, trust her with your ears too. Oh, and hugs to you special Mommy.
We're sorry about your diagnosis, Mudpie, but we know you and Mommy will work through this. And we're purring and praying for you both. XO
So many purrs and prayers to you, Mudpie! My parents' kitty Trapper and my sister's kitty Toby are both diabetic. They're both on the once daily Bexacat pill for feline diabetes and are now doing very well, and we hope you also start feeling better soon! We know you will, because you have the best mommy who will take incredible care of you. All the purrs and prayers!
mudpie, we hope that you are feeling better now
Aww, I’m sorry to hear this! Sounds like your Mom knows just how to care for you! You remind me of kitty, Spice. I lost her long ago, but she was a beautiful tortie too.
P.S. - you may want to check your spam folder, I sent you an email this morning.
Mudpie, we’re sorry you have diabetes but we know that it is treatable and that your mom will take good care of you and make sure you get what you need. Purrs.
Sweetheart, my little Beauty, I am sorry you got sweeter that way, but...you will do very well, I feel sure. Yes, it's a pain in yours and mom's neck sort, but both of you want to be well and happy ever after. So be a good girl.
Oh, sweet Mupdie, so sorry for this outcome, but it's treatable, so you eat your wet food, and we're sure your mommy is taking good care of you, like you take good care of her. Here come Extra Healing Pawkisses to feel better soon for you and your Grandpaw too🙏🏼🐾😽💞
We just saw this on the CB. We're glad you are feeling better!
I'm very sorry to hear this about Mudpie, Melissa. However, it is treatable. We managed a diabetic cat for a long time, our late Minx. Even I, with a needle phobia, learned how to give the insulin shots. There used to be a great online resource, The Janet and Binky charts, that gave carb contents of cat foods. I'm not sure if it's still there but the info can likely still be found.
