2024 Valentine's Day Gift Ideas for Cats & Cat Moms from Etsy

Meows from Mudpie!

Just like previous years Mommy wasn't planning on a Valentine's Day gift guide but I talked her into it by reminding her of all the cool things we find on Etsy! We've broken our picks down into gifts for cats and gifts for cat moms, so there's a little something for everybody!

We hope you enjoy our picks, and don't forget, if you find something here you like and make a purchase using our affiliate links, I get a little money for my piggy bank so I can buy something special for Mommy on Valentine's Day!

New Sleeping Arrangements #SundaySelfie

Meows from Mudpie!

For quite awhile now my grandpa has preferred sleeping in his recliner at night instead of his bed, and since he came home from the hospital (again) on Tuesday, Mommy has been sleeping in the living room too to keep an eye on him.

Since she doesn't find our loveseat comfy enough to sleep on, she's made a makeshift bed for herself on the floor using pillows and blankies, and I, for one, am loving it!

I wonder where she's gonna sleep tonight because I've got dibs on this pile! MOL!!!

Pee Ess: Tomorrow is grandpa's 87th birthday! Pawty at Mudpie's house!!!

And now our weekly answers (all answered by Mommy this week) for the Friendly Fill-Ins challenge, hosted by 15andmeowing and Four-Legged Furballs!

1. I used to dislike blue cheese dressing until I got older. Growing up, every time we went out to dinner mom would order a plate of salad with blue cheese dressing. I thought it was disgusting, but now it's my favorite too!

2. If it weren't for Mudpie, I would never have gotten through the last couple years with my sanity intact.

3. I find driving in wintry weather very intimidating.

4. Cats give me the inspiration to write. I think I'm a fairly good writer, but I wouldn't be able to write about just anything. Cats are my passion so writing about them comes easily to me.

Best of 2023 #PetPhotoFails

Meows from Mudpie!

Thank you for joining us for the very first Pet Photo Fails blog hop of the year!

2023 felt like one long blooper (and 2024 is starting out just as bad), but we thought it might be more fun to look back on the year with a smile by revisiting some of our favorite photo fails of the past 12 months. We think we picked some doozies!

Those are our wacky bloopers...let's see yours!

Caricature at the Cat Show

Meows from Mudpie!

Over the weekend, in between hospital visits, Mommy treated herself to something fun - a visit to our area's annual Cat Fanciers' Association cat show.

She loved seeing all the beautiful show cats but said not one of them could hold a candle to me!

The highlight of the show for her was a caricature artist doing on-the-spot sketches of attendees' cats. The artist, Joe Ferris, only needed about 15 minutes to work his magic. Mommy had to wait quite awhile for her turn, but it was well worth the wait.

Didn't my drawing turn out pawsome??? Mommy just adores it.

Conveniently, the hotel that hosted the cat show is practically next door to the hospital, so Mommy was able to visit grandpa right after leaving the show. To gauge his reaction she told him she had just adopted 3 more cats at the show. Hey, if he never wants to be home with us, why can't she have as many cats as she wants?!?!?!

Actually...grandpa wouldn't really mind if Mommy adopted another cat or two. I, on the other hand...

The Best Laid Plans #SundaySelfie

Meows from Mudpie!

You might remember that last Saturday after Mommy brought grandpa home from the hospital I plopped down on his coat, thinking if I held it down he couldn't put it back on and leave us again.

My plan didn't work. On Wednesday Mommy took him back to the hospital...and he took his warm coat with him! Wasn't that rude?!?!?! I can always count on Mommy to look out for me though, because she put down another coat for me to curl up on, and I think it's even cozier!

I wish I could report that grandpa is doing better, but he's not. The scary thing is the doctors can't really find anything wrong with him. We think he might be giving up. I have a feeling it'll be just me and Mommy before very long. We're trying to stay pawsitive, but it's hard.

And now our weekly answers (all answered by Mommy this week) for the Friendly Fill-Ins challenge, hosted by 15andmeowing and Four-Legged Furballs!

1. I am glad I got rid of clutter like old magazines, newspapers and other printed matter.

2. I wish I had kept ??? I haven't gotten rid of anything yet that I wish I had back again.

3. Life would be perfect if I never had to step foot in the hospital again. I know this is an unrealistic expectation for anyone, but after spending so much time there over the past couple years with my parents I'm starting to develop either claustrophobia or panic attacks when I'm in the hospital. Something comes over me and I can't get out of there fast enough.

4. This weekend's winter storm is too close for comfort. Our local CFA cat show is this weekend, and it seems like most years we're hit with an ice or snow storm that weekend. This year it's thankfully missing us, but I'm still not sure I'll be able to attend as dad was readmitted to the hospital on Wednesday night.

Feline Friday Flashback: Happy Birthday Dolly!!!

Meows from Mudpie!

Today is the one and only Dolly Parton's 78th birthday. It reminded me of 4 years ago when I participated in the Dolly Parton Challenge, a viral meme she started when she posted a collage featuring four photos of herself labeled LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram and Tinder on social media, with the caption: "Get you a woman who can do it all" with a winking emoji.

I love how mine turned out!

Feline Friday is simple to join. All you have to do is:

Post a picture, drawing, cartoon or video of a cat (They may be silly or cute).

Unboxing December's CatLadyBox

The theme of December's CatLadyBox was Whisker Wonderland...here's what was inside!

Featured Cat Lady Artist:
Jamie Shelman/The Dancing Cat

Whisker Wonderland T-Shirt:
I seem to say this every month lately, but I think this is my favorite shirt yet.
The graphic and the color are just spectacular.

Quilty Cats Blanket:
This blanket is SO soft and dreamy! It's been on our bed since it arrived.

Snowkitty Socks:
Can anyone have too many cat socks? I think not. Love the wintry print on these.

Starry Snowflake Catnip Wand Toy & Parker the Polar Bear Catnip Toy:
The wand toy allows cats the fun of chasing snowflakes in the house,
and the polar bear is super soft and plush (not to mention adorable).

I chose a few add-ons to my December box too -
the Santa Paws Elf Hat, Santa Paws Felt Cat Bed, and Catmas Dish Towel

Grandpa's Home!!! #SundaySelfie

Meows from Mudpie!

Mommy helped me snap this selfie yesterday morning just before she left to bring grandpa home from the hospital. I was all bright eyed and bushy tailed with excitement.

This second selfie was taken HOURS later (it was nearly dark out) when they finally made it back home. Mommy helped him take his coat off and just dropped it on the floor. I immediately found it and plopped down on it for a couple hours. Mommy doesn't know if a) I figure if I hold down the coat he can't put it back on and leave us again or b) I'm investigating what the hospital smells like because he obviously would rather hang out there than here at home with us!!! There's no other way to explain why he keeps going back over and over and over again...

1. Wouldn't it be nice if every cat had a home where they're worshiped and adored, as they all deserve to be.

2. I don't mind buying used electronics. My iPad, digital camera and desktop were bought used/refurbished, and I got my all-in-one printer for free from a neighborhood forum!

3. I have a strange habit of going up the basement stairs two at a time. I hit every stair going down, but not going up. No idea why.

4. I have enough cat shirts, mugs, and notebooks/journals to last a lifetime. Yet I still can't resist buying every cute one I see!

Thankful Thursday: Windblown Mudpie

Meows from Mudpie!

A blurry photo of me is nothing new. Usually it's because I'm a tortie on the move, but this time around it's for a whole other reason!

I'm blowing awayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tuesday night/early Wednesday morning we got our share of the huge winter storm that crossed the nation. It started as snow in the afternoon, then turned to sleet, then plain rain, and finally the wind kicked in. Meteorologists had warned the wind would be very, very bad overnight, but more so for towns close to the mountains, which we're not.

Mommy and I dozed off on the couch and didn't wake up until around 1:45am. Before going to bed Mommy went to the back door to see what was going on outside, and just as she did a gust blew up the driveway that made her think the door would come off its hinges. She was petrified but I was intrigued by the freight train sounds and wanted her to open the door so I could see! MOL she told me even at nearly 20 pounds I would probably blow away out there.

She checked Facebook and sure enough, a local meteorologist posted that the local airport had just measured a 69 MPH wind gust at 1:53am (our 4th highest wind gust on record).

I went to sleep on the couch and Mommy went to bed, but she stayed awake until nearly 4am once the worst seemed to be over. Thousands lost power, there was a lot of property damage, but thankfully we survived unscathed.

**************************************

PS: Thank you for the purrs and prayers for my grandpa. He's still in the hospital but might be discharged soon. He has an infection just like last year, but hopefully we caught it faster this time around.

Book Review: A Christmas Yowl by Sarah May Bird

Loki isn’t a bad ghost cat. Just mischievous. What did anyone expect when they named him after a mythical trickster god?

Christmas is the season to spread love, joy and pranks. And Loki intends to particularly focus on the latter this year.

But when he takes a joke too far, he is visited by the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future with a stern warning that has him racing to save a life.

Will this Christmas end in tragedy for one cat and her unborn kittens? Or will Loki shed his namesake and do something good in the spirit of the season?

Grab a coffee and a mince pie and join Loki in this festive short story proving that even ghost cats have hearts.

This short story is a part of the Cat's Whisker Cafe mystery series, which I haven't read yet but certainly plan to! The stars of the series are Willow, owner of a cat cafe in a sleepy English village, and her ghost cats, Loki and Luna. Loki is quite a little troublemaker, and in this Christmas story he's forced to see the error of his ways after he meets a sweet little calico in the graveyard and puts her life in danger when he can't be bothered to help her find her way back home.

A Christmas Carol is my all-time favorite story, so I knew a cat version of the classic tale would be something extra special, and was I ever right! It made me laugh, it made me tear up, it is simply one of the sweetest "tails" I've ever read. My only complaint is that I wish it was a full length book instead of a short story!

Sick, Scared, Snowy #SundaySelfie

Meows from Mudpie!

Mommy helped me snap these selfies yesterday just before leaving for hours and hours to take grandpa to the hospital again. (For the second time in a week. They spent New Year's Day there too.) He had to be admitted this time and needs lots of purrs and prayers.

Of course we're also getting our first snowstorm of the season this weekend and as much as Mommy loves the snow, she hates driving in it. Hopefully the snow means she can stay home with me and keep in touch with the hospital by phone.

2024 isn't looking to be any better in our house than 2023 was :(

1. If you looked in my closet, you'd see a lot of cat shirts.

2. When I'm having a bad day, I like to cuddle with Mudpie.

3. Spending time with a beloved pet is the best remedy for just about anything.

4. It's no secret that I prefer the company of cats to people.

A Very Grumpy Cat Christmas

Meows from Mudpie!

Mommy and her sweet friend Kerry (from the former Noir Kitty Mews blog) always had a special connection as huge Grumpy Cat fans. Just before Christmas we got an extra special surprise. Kerry contacted us saying she wanted to share her Grumpy Cat collection with us, knowing it would have a cherished home.

When the packages arrived Mommy was in tears over their contents. There were goodies in there for both of us, but the biggest surprise of all was the light-up pathway markers. Mommy saw those online a few years back and adored them but was never able to find them. She loves vintage Christmas blow molds and the pathway markers remind her so much of them. She's over the moon that she finally owns a set!

As many of you know, Kerry's beloved Valentine, Myrna, and Bessie have sadly gone to the Rainbow Bridge, and Kerry herself is now in hospice care. We send her purrs and prayers always, and can't thank her enough for sending us her Grumpy Cat treasures.

Mudpie Mooned On Zoom

Mommy here!

I have to commandeer today's blog post to give an example of how utterly adorable Mudpie is. (Not that you need it!)

New Year's Day has always been a big deal for my father's side of the family. Throughout my entire life the whole family gathered together at the farmhouse he grew up in to have a big dinner.

The pandemic put an end to that tradition, and because we have elderly relatives that are still hesitant to attend a large gathering, it hasn't resumed.

This year one of my cousins organized a Zoom call so we could all be together for a couple hours virtually on New Year's night. I put my laptop on dad's lap during the call, and in no time at all Mudpie decided she wanted a cuddle and jumped up onto his lap too. She tiptoed across the keyboard to everyone's amusement, and flashed her cute little bottom right on camera. (She's very thankful her fur has grown back "down there" after it was shaved this fall!) She ended up clicking both the mute button and the option to leave the call, but no harm was done.

She settled down on dad's chest as the call continued, and everyone could hear her purring. When she decided to get up she looked at the screen and the movement caught her attention, so she started pawing at people's faces.

The whole thing just made my day. During the pandemic there were so many viral videos of cats "attending" online meetings, I couldn't believe Mudpie became the star of our family Zoom call. Although she's so special I really shouldn't be surprised.

I emailed my cousin to see if by any chance he had recorded the call, but sadly, he didn't. How I would love to have that memory preserved on video!

Happy Mew Year 2024

Meows from Mudpie!

Who's ready to bury 2023 in the litter box and move on to 2024? I sure am!

Here's to a new year filled with cuddles, smooches, and squeezies!!!
