Remembering Tara and Truffles, Today and Every Day
We had intended to go silent today in memory of Tara and Truffles, but I do have one favor to ask.
In honor of my precious girls, please give your own fur babies a little something special today. Maybe an extra hug or kiss, a few more minutes of play or cuddle time, a few extra treats wouldn't hurt.
Our time together is so fleeting; their fragile lives all too short. Never miss an opportunity to show them how much they're loved.
Many thanks to Ann at Zoolatry for the lovely memorial graphic. And if you missed my letter to Truffles yesterday on the one year anniversary of our last day together, you can read it here.

Our Last Day Together, 365 Days Ago
Precious Truffles,
A year ago today started out just like any other day. Little did I know it was destined to be a day that will remain with me until I draw my last breath.
The night before had been a late one. Rain at Daytona had pushed the NASCAR race into the wee hours of the morning, ending around 3AM. I sat on the floor to watch the closing laps and you seemed to be urging me to hurry up and get to bed. I wonder now if you knew it would be our last night together. Even though it was extremely hot you curled up between my legs which had been your favorite spot on the bed since the day I brought you home less than two short years before.
I woke up a little drowsier than usual but it was Monday morning and a long week stretched ahead. In the back of mind I was thinking a vet visit was probably in the near future because your breathing had been bothering me all weekend. Even your grandma had asked why your tummy was noticeably moving from across the room. I googled abdominal breathing and read some pretty scary things, but you were four years old...why would I think it was anything more serious than being overheated? I must just be more paranoid than usual...after all, tomorrow would be the two year anniversary of saying good-bye to Tara.
After work I came home to find that you hadn't eaten much, and then you went in to lay on the cool bedroom floor. Throughout the afternoon I kept checking on you, watching you breathe. After dinner we finished up our blog post tribute to Tara and while I watched a little Investigation Discovery and Food Network, you took a nice long nap in your favorite window. But even while watching TV I had this strange, sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach that I still can't explain.
Then at 9:45 all hell broke loose. I won't go into the details again of what you went through; you've already so eloquently done that in your farewell post that has touched so many peoples' hearts.
I remember watching the people in the emergency room that night. It was so busy, and I just sat there watching everyone coming and going with their pets. I was so jealous of those paying their bill and heading out the door with their best friend, knowing you most likely wouldn't be returning home.
I've never told anyone that while at the ER I didn't cry, even when I received your diagnosis. It was the weirdest thing, but I couldn't cry. The whole situation was just so unbelievable to me that I didn't know how to react. It wasn't until I got in the car and headed home without you that the floodgates opened up. But still, the whole route home I was completely numb. To this day when I'm on those same roads I remember the horror of that night.
My greatest regret is that I left you. Why did I head home, saying I'd see you in the morning? If I'd stayed there just another 30 minutes I would have been there for you at the end. I could have held you, comforted you as you took your last breath.
Going home for the second time without you was even worse than the first, because that time I knew I would never see you again. And walking in the door, seeing your food dishes, your toys, your cat beds, just as you left them, is a heartache I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy. With other cats I picked up their things after a couple days because it hurt too much to look at them, but I didn't pick yours up until just before Mudpie arrived. Maybe if your toys and beds remained you'd come back to claim them. Maybe the whole thing was just a bad dream.
They say anger is one of the 5 stages of grief and I can't get past that. You didn't deserve the tragically short life you had. You were a baby...we were robbed of so much time together. To this day when I tell people that I lost two cats on the exact same day two years apart, almost to the hour, they can't believe it. How could they when I still can't believe it?
The one bright spot of the year has been Mudpie. I know you and Tara conspired and sent her to me, and you couldn't have done any better. She's absolutely perfect in every single way. I only wish she could have come to me under different circumstances.
You don't know how I dread the thought of tonight and tomorrow coming. I wish I could completely erase July 7th from the calendar. I fear that date is tainted by a poison there's no escape from.
It's been a hard year, but a year in which I learned the true value of friendship. So many people loved you and will never forget you. And it goes without saying, but I miss you desperately.
I always will.
Love you forever,
Mommy

Book Review: If It Fits, I Sits: Cats in Awkward Places
Already a popular Internet meme, it was obviously only a matter of time before cute pictures of cats squeezing themselves into awkward places was turned into a book.
A wine rack, a shoe, a bowl, luggage, baskets, drawers...if a cat feels like curling up somewhere, their unquenchable spirit will find a way to make it work. It comes completely natural to them, and even though we shouldn't be surprised by their contortions, we can't help but sigh over the adorableness of it all.
These are a couple personal favorites:
If It Fits, I Sits: Cats in Awkward Places is available online and in bookstores today and would make the purr-fect gift for cat lovers of all ages.

Tortie Shorties on Mystery Monday: Truffle Edition
Meows from Mudpie!
As we approach the one year anniversary of Truffles' unexpected journey to the Rainbow Bridge later this week, much of the week is going to be about her...and I'm okay with that. She and Tara before her paved the way for everything we do today.
Mommy recently found a pair of mystery novellas with a truffle theme, and we thought it would be fun to feature them here today.
From the publisher: After the death of her beloved grandfather, Catharine “Mac” Mackenzie opens a chocolate shop in her sleepy little New England bayside town with her best friend Sabrina. Things are going well for the daring duo, until Sabrina’s landlord, one of the wealthiest women in town, is murdered. Toss in a British detective with a wicked sense of humor, a shudder-worthy encounter with a childhood friend, and you’re in for a delectable mystery experience that’ll have you on the edge of your seat!
Tortie Shorties Review: Best friends Mac and Brie run a seaside chocolate cafe in New England. Brie is the true chocolatier; Mac is trying to keep busy while grieving the loss of her grandfather, the former mayor who left her quite well off. Her true passion is criminology which she was studying before returning home. So imagine her excitement when a prominent member of society is murdered in her bed! Mac can't help but stick her nose in and use what she's learned to nab a killer!
Add in mouth-water descriptions of cocoa confections, a quirky British detective, humor, romance and danger, and you have the ingredients for a delectable debut!
A hit and run right outside her shop door leaves a man dead and questions swirling. When the victim is identified as Steven Denforth, the most hated and reviled man in town, it resurrects the fissures that had recently torn Maple Hills apart. It seems that when Denforth first came to town, the quiet man bought the local paper, then proceeded to publish damning articles about some of the communities’ most prominent members - secrets that no one should have known about.
Now he is dead and everyone is a suspect, including Nikki. As both a former reporter and an FBI Consultant, Nikki instinctively knows the dirt in Maple Hills is piled high and if she doesn’t get to the bottom of it, and to the murder, then her stay in the quaint Northern Town may very well be short lived.
Tortie Shorties Review: Of course it's the cover and title that drew me to this story; but unfortunately except for the protagonist owning a chocolate shop there's not a truffle to be found. I was really hoping for a "poisoned truffle" cause of death. The setting of my home state of Vermont had great appeal to me as well.
For an estimated 90 page novella there's a lot going on in Maple Hills! Maybe a little too much for such a short read since readers don't even "meet" the killer until Nikki figures out that they're the culprit, and much of the action takes place off the page, making for quite a few confusing twists.
Nikki is a very interesting protagonist with her background as a former reporter and FBI consultant, so I'll probably pick up the next book in the series to see how she continues to make her mark in small town Vermont.

10 Ways to Keep Your Cat Calm On July 4th (Because They Can't Wear Ear Plugs!)
A couple weeks ago Mudpie was napping in her KatKabin during a thunderstorm. When a particularly strong rumble of thunder rolled through she shot out of her cozy spot like an atomic bomb had gone off. It was a good reminder that she wasn't with me for the majority of last summer so I have no idea how she'll react to other loud noises like fireworks, and here we are at the beginning of a long holiday weekend filled with Independence Day festivities. (And if your neighborhood kids are anything like mine, celebrate early and often seems to be their motto.)
Statistics show that more pets go missing during the July 4th holiday than any other time of year, and July 5th is the busiest day of the year for animals shelters nationwide. Sadly, fewer than 2% of lost cats are ever reunited with their families.
Holidays are supposed to be fun, not scary, so we've put together a few tips to help ensure that both you and your cat enjoy a safe and relaxing holiday together:
1. Distractions are key: Play music, run a fan or AC, turn on the TV or radio.
2. Playtime! A rousing play session before events begin can help kitty relax and might even tire them out! This would be a good occasion to break out a brand new toy too.
3. Keep your cat inside. (Of course, this goes without saying any day of the year.)
4. Stay home with them if possible; they will feel safer with you around.
5. Keep calm and quiet yourself to ensure your cat that all is well and normal in their little world.
6. Make sure they have a safe place in your home to hide away stockpiled with their favorite bedding, toys and treats. Don't forget the litter box!
7. Lower the blinds and close the windows (make sure they're secure!) to limit the amount of light and sound they're exposed to.
8. Be prepared for the worst-case scenario by making sure your cat's microchip and/or ID tags are up to date. Current photos are a good idea too.
9. If you have friends over, make sure they know you have pets in the house and ask that they help keep them safe.

10. Consider a calming remedy: Thundershirts, Feliway plug-ins, flower esssences such as Stress Stopper or Storm Soother, even something as simple as calming treats can be very effective.
