Squirrels and Dogs and Birdies, Oh My!

The theme of this week's Mewsic Moves Me blog hop is songs with animals in the title...how could we not participate? I'll say right up front that I'm embarrassed by the absence of cat songs. Apparently cats and country music don't mix!

At first I thought I was going to have to let Conway sit this one out (*gasp*) because he didn't record a single (country) song with an animal in the title, but then I found this one going way back to his early rock days. It got to #35 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart in 1960.

My guy got a shout out in Honey Bee, a 2011 hit from Blake Shelton...

If you’ll be my Louisiana
I’ll be your Mississippi
You’ll be my Little Loretta
I’ll be your Conway Twitty

Speaking of Blake Shelton, I love last year's I'll Name the Dogs...

When I was a little girl I used to think this song was hilarious. I still do!

You can't have a list of country songs with animal titles without at least one song about horses!

Do any of our choices catch your ear?

Do you have a favorite song with an animal in the title?

Melissa,

I'm telling you, I really like ole Conway Twitty singing rock n' roll. He has such swag as a rocker and reminds me so much of a young Elvis but then you mentioned in a previous post that the King had an influence on Conway. I like Blake Shelton. I didn't know much about him until I began watching The Voice. His fun, easy-going personality clicked with me but I imagine he does with everyone. "Honey Bee" is a cute tune. Oh, I'm glad you shared Ray Stevens' "The Mississippi Squirrel Revival". I like just about everyone of Stevens' hilarious songs. Man, I remember the day when he was on top of his A-game and got a lot of radio time. One of the local channels carries Ray's Nashville TV show and sometimes we come across it. I'm glad that he's still performing. Thanks for sharing and hitting the dance floor with the 4M gang today, my friend. Have a blessed week! :)

I like Blake Shelton , but I never heard I'll Name the Dogs. Nice choices despite the lack of cats :)

I’ve always thought Mississippi Squirrel Revival hilarious, too. :)

NO CAT SONGS?? I thought the Garth Brooks' song could be a cover of the Stones' song "Wild Horses" but it's not. Didn't Mr. Twitty (hee hee) have a song with Snakes in the title? They ain't animals but neither are bees. You're forgiven, MP.

Hmm. What comes to mind is a forgettable song, I think sung by Stonewall Jackson (eyeroll), with a refrain, "If that cat could talk, what tales he could tell, about Della and the dealer and the dog as well, but the cat was cool and he never said a mumblin' word."

I actually sort of liked "Me and You and a Dog Named Boo," preferably sung by just about anybody except S. Jackson.

I think my favorite song with an animal in it was "Old Faithful," as sung by Eddy Arnold.

Hi Melissa,
You asked if any of your songs caught my ear? My answer: EACH ONE OF THEM! I loved your song choices. That Conway Twitty one was a big score of a classic find! It is so good.
And I adore Blake Shelton. I like both of his songs that you featured. Of course Garth's "Wild Horses" is excellent. I have to say the one I enjoyed the most was the "Mississippi Squirrel Revival." OMG, I had to watch it twice, it was so funny. I'm still giggling. Thanks for making my night with that one!

Have a great rest of the week,

Blake had a concert where I lived last night, at a golf tournament - very well attended (he is quite popular here in upstate New York) so you gave me my very own mini - concert: no crowds, no traffic jams, no fighting with inclement weather. My favorite of your set was Ray Stevens - he had some wonderful novelty songs "back in the day". Conway Twitty - believe it or not it was only recently that I knew he had a successful few years as a rocker before he switched to country. Nice selection! Alana ramblinwitham.blogspot.com
